All warm-blooded animals, especially horses and humans, are susceptible to tetanus (lockjaw), which is caused by the
Clostridium tetani
organism. The toxin that this organism produces, if it enters the body through a wound, affects the nervous system. Vaccination is the most effective prevention. Tetanus has an 80 percent mortality rate in horses. This bulletin discusses symptoms and prevention in horses.
