Watson, Wyatt Cone, and Mike Haskett This aphidlike insect, which feeds on roots of grapevines, destroyed two-thirds of the vineyards on the European continent between 1850 and 1900. In the eastern United States, grape phylloxera lives on native grape varieties and causes little concern in grape growing areas. This bulletin will help you identify phylloxera adults and nymphs on the roots of infested vines. Early detection is important, as quarantine and sanitation are the primary weapons against this pest.
