A Worksheet for Analyzing the Economics of Bovine Somatotropin Adoption
A Worksheet for Analyzing the Economics of Bovine Somatotropin Adoption EB1777
Author(s): Gayle Willett, Ruth Blauwiekel, David Grusenmeyer, and Herbert Hinman
Bovine somatotropin (BST) is a naturally-occurring protein produced in the pituitary glands of cattle. Research shows that supplementing the BST of a lactating dairy cow increases milk production. Now that synthetic BST can be produced inexpensively, such supplementation is an option for many dairy farmers. This worksheet details the information farmers need to evaluate the profitability of using BST, including added revenue and costs, added income, and a breakeven analysis. Also includes instructions for using BST spreadsheet evaluation software and forms for ordering the software.
