Silvicultural Alternatives: Variable Retention Harvests in Forest Ecosystems of Western Washington
Silvicultural Alternatives: Variable Retention Harvests in Forest Ecosystems of Western Washington EB1899
Author(s): Amy K. Barg, Donald P. Hanley
Foresters and land managers now include wildlife and fisheries habitat, water quality, and soil stability in their management plans. Variable retention as a timber harvest system encourages leaving standing or fallen dead trees in parts of the stand to vary the structure and cover for wildlife species. Multiple canopies, snags, and the duff layer on the forest floor all contribute to structural complexity. Original sketches by Lara Muffley show retention patterns. Includes glossary.
