Raising Ratites
Raising Ratites PNW0494E
Author(s): J.C. Hermes

Online Only

Ratites are a group of birds that includes ostriches, emu, rheas, cassowaries, and kiwis. The most economically important species are the ostrich and emu, with the rhea a distant third. This publication discusses in detail the many factors in raising ratites, including incubation temperature and humidity, brooding, growing in outdoor pens or pastures, reproduction, feeding, marketing, and price. It also discusses the disadvantages of having little research-based scientific information about the birds, including nutrition requirements.
