Potato Bruise Prevention: Potato Handling
Potato Bruise Prevention: Potato Handling VT0062   Moving potatoes in and out of storage offers another set of problems that can bruise potatoes. This video provides valuable information and handy reminders for new and seasoned workers alike. Footage includes methods of tarping a truck, a reminder to wear soft-soled shoes when you must walk on the potatoes, and a checklist for equipment. To move potatoes into storage, wet the floor down well before building the pile to reduce pressure bruising. Maintain an even flow of potatoes; keep conveyor belt full. To reduce drops and rollbacks check hugger belts and flights. Build piles in stair steps, keep the boom close to the pile, and build level top piles. When removing potatoes from storage, make sure they are at least 45 degrees before you begin. Load your truck from the back, using a telescoping boom, and keeping it close to the pile.
